Pro Wrestling by Adam Carriker

by Adam Carriker

Adam Carriker wanted to change it up for his third blog. We decided to give you all an incentive to being active in his blog too. We are going to give away a signed photo to the winner of the contest. With WrestleMania coming around the corner, Adam Carriker shares some stories about growing up and developing a strong love for the WWE. He also shares his predictions for this weekend’s WrestleMania! What do you think of his opinions?

Make sure you check out our interview for a background by clicking here.

I will always remember watching Hulk Hogan slam Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III. I will also always remember the Ultimate Warrior beat Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI. Every Monday Night was filled with epic drama from these larger-than-life characters. Monday Night Raw and Monday Nitro always started at 6pm (pacific time) and ended at 8:00pm. At least they were supposed to, but they always ran over time. I will never forget flipping back and forth trying not to miss any of the action, especially when 8pm rolled around, because both shows would reach their peak at the end and you couldn’t get stuck watching one show or else you would miss the end of the other one. This was back in the day before there was this little thing called TiVo, so once you missed it you couldn’t watch it later at your leisurely convenience.

The other memory I have of wrestling is when my dad and I went down to rent the little box to put on top of your TV, so you could get the pay-per-views. We didn’t do this a ton because it cost money, but we would occasionally do it, and that always meant it was a big deal. The last pay-per-view we ever ordered together was WCW’s Bash at the Beach in 1996. The day Hulk Hogan turned heel. I will never forget when he came out and it looked like he was going to save some wrestlers from getting beat up, but instead he joined in the attack and thus, became a bad guy. Afterwards, he was talking on the mike and the entire crowd was throwing their food and drinks at him. They hit him in the middle of the ring. Thus, birthing what became known as the NWO or New World Order of Pro Wrestling. This was the last pay-per-view we ever ordered. My dad refused to watch Pro Wrestling afterwards and to this day, is still disgusted with it. From then on, it was banned in the Carriker household. I missed a good five years of wrestling because of it.

I remember when I was the eighth grade I started hearing everyone talk about this guy named Stone Cold Steve Austin. For about a year, he was all I heard about. Finally, I decided to watch wrestling while my dad was in the other room. Now, you know how you hear about somebody and you get this image of them in your head, and it is usually way off? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me. I had pictured Stone Cold to be an African American guy with earrings. Instead, he is a Caucasian guy from Texas with a leather vest who ran around drinking beer and flipping everyone off. Not quite who I had imagined. But, I was hooked. Every Monday night for the next three years while my dad was in the other room, I would watch Raw and Nitro until I heard him on his way to my room, then I’d quickly change the channel. Out of the two hour shows, I’d probably get to watch about an hour of wrestling, so about thirty minutes of each show. So not a whole lot, but enough to keep up with the story lines so I knew what was going on.

Then when my freshman year of college rolled around… Talk about all the freedoms that go along with that! One of which was that I could watch all the wrestling I wanted. It was great! This was right around the time that Goldberg came back and joined the WWE. He is my favorite wrestler of all time. It was perfect. I loved his entrance. I loved his combination of raw power/explosiveness. And I loved his attitude of running right over and right through people. All of it really intrigued me. Let’s not forget his streak of 172 straight wins as well.

That is how I got into wrestling as a young boy, tried to stay in touch with wrestling, and still the reasons why I love watching it to this very day. I have to admit, my wife is not a fan, even though she always watches and is paying attention from the other room, but she will never admit it. I told her when our children are old enough to know what’s on TV, I won’t watch it around them, but we will see.

(IMPORTANT: In Carriker’s post below, he predicts the outcome of the biggest matches at WrestleMania this Sunday. Leave a comment below with your prediction for all eight of the matches! In the event that more than one person has the “most correct” predictions, a random name will be selected from the list as the winner. The person selected as the winner will WIN a signed 8×10 photo of Carriker.)

Last but not least, here are my predictions for WrestleMania:

1- Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs. Divas Champion Beth Phoenix & Eve

I think that Maria Menounos will pin Divas champion Beth Phoenix scoring the upset and the win for her and Kelly Kelly. Whenever they have a guest at WrestleMania, the guest always wins, and beating the Divas Champion would be the most thrilling.

2- Randy Orton vs. Kane

This is a tough one to pick. They are both making recent comebacks and they are both top competitors. I think Kane will score the minor upset using some sort of underhanded tactic, cementing him as “the Devil’s Favorite Demon.”

3- Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny

I predict that David Otunga pins Booker T with some outside interference from John Laurinaitis to get the victory for Team Johnny, making Laurinaitis the General Manager of both Raw and Smackdown. This will vault Otunga’s career as well as keep the very good new found heel Laurinaitis on Raw and promoting him in charge of Smackdown as well. Thus, making him a bigger star than he has ever been.

4- Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show

Part of me thinks that the Big Show will improve on his 3-8 WrestleMania record with a win, and his first WrestleMania win in singles competition. The other part of me thinks this is what could uplift Cody Rhodes to bigger and better things. In the end, I think Cody Rhodes wins, vaulting him into a possible World Heavyweight Title match against the winner of Daniel Bryan and Sheamus.

5- World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus

Sheamus wins, re-cementing himself as one of the top dogs in the WWE. Even though Daniel Bryan just won’t go away, I think he loses and Sheamus starts to climb to the top of the WWE. This has to be the worst title match in the history of WrestleMania.

6- WWE Champion CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho

This will be the best wrestling match of the whole night. I think CM Punk will keep his title by beating Jericho. I would also not be surprised if there is a rematch-post WrestleMania.

7- The Undertaker vs. Triple H (Hell in a Cell Match with special ref, HBK Shawn Michaels)

To me, this is the toughest match to predict all night. I find it hard to believe that the Undertaker beats Triple H two years in a row, right after beating HBK two years in a row at WrestleMania. Part of thinks it would be really cool if Undertaker won, running his WrestleMania win streak to 20-0, setting up an epic match against John Cena at next year’s WrestleMania. I think HBK will play an obvious role in this match somehow. My prediction is that HBK screws his buddy Triple H out of the win, thus setting up a match between HBK and Triple H to find out who the better wrestler is. This will also set up that Undertaker vs. Cena match for next year. I know, I’m reaching out pretty far into the future here with this one, but hey, that’s what makes it fun.

8- John Cena vs. The Rock

Perhaps the most anticipated match in WrestleMania history. It’s definitely the longest anticipated match in history (except Floyd Mayweather vs PacMan, if that ever happens), with over a year’s worth of build up. I predict this will be the most emotional match of all time. Nobody can electrify the crowd like the Rock. And being in front of his home town of Miami, Florida, that place is going to be nuts for Rocky, especially with John Cena as his opponent. Cena gets responses out of an audience I’ve never seen any other superstar ever get, with the combination of both negative and positive energy he generates at the same time. In the end I think Cena wins, signifying the passing of the torch from the Rock onto Cena. This will make Cena one of the biggest superstars of all time.

1- Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs Divas Champion Beth Phoenix & Eve

I think Maria will pin Eve due to some tomfoolery & shenanigans.

    2- Randy Orton vs. Kane

I see Orton winning this, then going after the World Heavyweight Title.

3- Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny

I think team Johnny will win. Team Teddy is pretty weak IMO, plus a heel GM always works better.

4- Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show

Cody will find a way to win, only because Big Show would look weird as IC Champ due to his size. I wouldn’t be surprised for to see a no contest/countout or something.

5- World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus

Do I think Bryan will find a way to win? YES YES YES YES YES!

6- WWE Champion CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho

This one is going to be epic, I see Jericho winning & definitely having a rematch down the road.

7- The Undertaker vs. Triple H (Hell in a Cell Match with special ref, HBK Shawn Michaels)

Taker will win & hopefully set up an HBK return next year! I think HBK will cost HHH the match probably unintentionally.

8- John Cena vs. The Rock

The Rock will win & probably set up a rematch at Summerslam which Cena will win.

Not a bad take on the predictions, here’s how I see it:

Diva Tag Match: Beth Phoenix and Eve win in a quick and sloppy match, while I understand Maria Menundos has the “celebrity guest” card in her favor, she also is injured and already pinned Beth at the Tribute to the Troops show back at Christmas, I just don’t see her pinning the champ twice.

Randy Orton v Kane: It’s a shame this match was thrown together so quickly in the last few weeks, it kinda gets lost within the hype of the other matches, I see Randy Orton coming away with the win as he’s due.

Team Teddy v Team Johnny: To me, while I like the idea of GM control being at stake here, I think I share a little bitterness with everyone that this isn’t a money in the bank match like originally planned. I see Team Johnny winning but with a nice ironic twist in that Drew McIntyre, the very man Teddy Long fired, gets his just desserts by returning the favor to the now former GM of Smackdown, by pinning opposing team captain Santino.

IC Title Match Cody Rhodes (c) v Big Show:
Dismal as Big Show’s Wrestlemania record has been, I see him taking the belt off Cody as it’s time for Cody’s push to greater things.

World Heavyweight Championship match Daniel Bryan (c) v Shamus:
I feel the same sentiment in that this match is flatter than week old soda. Not a tremendous build, and having Bryan weasel his way around clean victories are to blame. Nonetheless Sheamus has spent enough time away from the major title picture where I believe he should have been instead of Bryan, which is why all will be right within the world when he takes the strap off vegan boy.

End of an Era (for now) Hell in a Cell Match Undertaker v Triple H, Shawn Michaels as special referee:
This has to be the toughest match to predict on the entire card and kudos to WWE to make a back to back rematch interesting. Both Taker and Triple H are well into their silver years of wrestling, Taker more so only doing Wrestlemania events now. No doubt they will both put it all on the line inside the cell making this a match that may be talked about for years, but not because of the Undertaker losing, he will win. While everyone thinks HBK will screw Triple H, I just don’t see it happening because of the End of an Era hype, there has to be a clean finish. Undertaker wins, 20-0. Next year could be interesting as Cena-Taker or perhaps Lesnar-Taker could happen

WWE Championship Match CM Punk (c) v Chris Jericho:
If you’ve followed wrestling, major and minor circuits like myself for the past 15 years, you know THIS will be show stealing match as both of these men are extremely talented in the ring and on the microphone. The recent build of bringing Punk’s personal life and demons into the mix adds just a touch more emotion and aggressive nature to the match, just what is needed. I expect this to be one of the matches that will quietly define this Wrestlemania along with the cell match. In the end, I see Punk retaining his title, but I dont see this being the last time we see these 2 in the ring facing each other.

Main Event, John Cena v The Rock: WWE took this build to an old school style year long build which saw some fans lose interest and some gain. Looking back, I think after its said and done WWE will do things differently in the future but this match will deliever and satisfy the hype. That being said, John Cena has to win this match. Literally. After this, The Rock goes back to the movie life abd Cena stays true to his calling, unlike The Rock, wrestling. Bringing the collective whispers of the lockeroom being bitter over Rock taking the main event away swings my pick to Cena. If you remember, CM Punk’s famous worked shoot last summer on Raw mentioned bitter feelings over “Dwayne” taking the spotlight away, I couldnt agree more after hearing countless interviews from respective veterans of the business saying “Dwayne cares about Dwayne and just Dwayne”. I always support team players, Cena represents this perfectly in WWE. This is why he’ll be victorious Sunday, in front of The Rock’s hometown crowd, passing the torch to a well deserving talent

Here’s my picks, plus the order I expect them go on the show.

1- Team Teddy vs. Team Johnny

Team Johnny will pick up the win here, not sure on who will get the final pin fall could be a surprise add on due to an “injury” but I see this giving us more Johnny (not a good thing really but maybe they will leave him on Smackdown more).

    2- Randy Orton vs. Kane

Kane is feeling in for the injured Wade Barrett here so Randy picks up the win to end this storyline.

3- Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show

Big Show has been made to look like a fool, that will continue as he will get a surprise loss.

4- World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus

Sheamus wins, WWE has really dropped the ball on Bryan as champ, they have pushed him completely different from when he got the title as the under dog.

5- The Undertaker vs. Triple H (Hell in a Cell Match with special ref, HBK Shawn Michaels)

This will be an awesome match despite ages of all three, the drama will carry it and all three will leave everything on the line for this match. Taker will hit the 20-0 mark for Wrestlemania and most likely be in a retirement match next year win or loss.

6- Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs. Divas Champion Beth Phoenix & Eve

Maria Menounos will pin Eve, scoring the upset and the win for her and Kelly Kelly. This will get over the guest star with out hurting much of anyone. This will also allow Eve to have a storyline point with Ryder.

7- WWE Champion CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho

This will be the best wrestling match of the whole night. I think CM Punk will keep his title by beating Jericho. I would also not be surprised if there is a rematch-post WrestleMania. (I agree with Adams post, not changing it.)

8- John Cena vs. The Rock

Awesome build up for this whole match with how they have built it over the year using mostly twitter. The drama here will be almost like Hogan vs. Rock was. Hogan pasted the torch that night and now Rock will to Cena. (Rock is rumored to be hanging around for a few more months so expect a rematch with Rock winning somewhere). Cena needs the win more and would be damaged more without it. The crowd has the chance to be the real tide turner in this match and to be the biggest thing.

The Undertaker will win because HBK is going to do some stupid causing Triple H to knock him out and miss Triple H beating The Undertaker but will wake up in time to see Triple H lose! Cena will be smelling what The Rock is cooking tomorrow night when Rock knocks his butt out!

very insightful. first I’m sorry you missed everything from 1996-2001 easily the GREATEST era in the history of wrestling. The moment Adam mentions the 96 bash at the beach, probably the biggest moment in wrestling history to this day. hogan turning heel created the NWO which vaulted WCW ahead of the WWF and launched the Monday night wars. used to be able to relive these moments on justin.tv but they closed all wrestling channels permanently. hope you enjoy the show, good luck this year and Hail to the Redskins.

I agree with most of the winners. I don’t believe Punk wins though. I think Jerricho pulls this off to add to his incredible resume, but I believe it will be a very controversial win. I believe championships change hands on April 1st. But on raw, one of the two will change hands again. The only other one I think is different from yours is Orton beating Kane. Orton will pull off the RKO from somewhere impossible. I am a little biased as Jerricho and Orton 2 of my top 3 all time wrestlers though. Regardless…I can’t wait. And of course to you AC…HTTR!!! Can’t wait to see you in the rind as well, but after football. We need you in DC!

  24. Ok, I’m gonna make this short and sweet.

    1. Beth & Eve beat Kelly Kelly and Maria Menounos
Kharma shows up after the match.

    2. Randy Orton beats Kane
I don’t get this recent push of Kane. He obviously doesn’t have a lot left. He’s just keeping Orton busy while they put the title limelight on others.

    3. Team Johnny beats Team Teddy
Teddy’s team just looks weak as anything. I really like the idea of using this match to end Miz’s line of bad luck and vaulting him back into the title hunt.

    4. Cody Rhodes beats Big Show
If this was a non-title match, I’d probably go for Big Show but because it’s for the I/C I can’t see Show winning this. Cody Rhodes is on the up and a loss here would destroy the good work put in so far. Rhodes reminds me of his old mentor, Randy Orton – holds the I/C belt practically forever and then eventually gets his world title.

    5. Daniel Bryan beats Sheamus
This should be an upset but it’s really not. Getting the American Dragon into WWE took a lot and the fact that WWE persevered with it tells me they really want to make it work. Sheamus may be Triple H’s pet but this is the Wrestlemania that changes the business in much the same way as Wrestlemania XX did.

    6. CM Punk beats Chris Jericho
Similar reasons for this win as with Bryan but with one key difference – this rivalry isn’t going away any time soon. We’re gonna be halfway to SUmmerslam before WWE ends this one.

    7. Undertaker beats HHH
This one is gonna be a violent throwback to the past. My biggest prediction – that there will be blood. Lots of blood. Unfortunately, this will likely also be the last blood match for a long time given WWE’s current policies. In the end, I agree with Adam in that Taker wins to set up a match with Cena. However, I will also predict that Taker would win that too leading to a rematch at Wrestlemania XXX in which The Streak ends at 21-1.

    8. John Cena beats The Rock
I just can’t see this match going any other way. WWE is full of re-runs and this is just another one. This is Rock vs Hogan all over again but this time Rock is the old man passing the torch. The only way Rock could win this was if he were coming back full time and I just don’t see that happening.
